⭐ Why Choose Ground Chicken in the Air Fryer?

Making air fryer ground chicken isn’t just a trend; it’s a smart choice for many reasons. Here’s why this cooking method and protein should be a staple in your kitchen:

  • Incredibly Fast: After a quick air fryer preheat, you can have perfectly cooked ground chicken ready in as little as 5 minutes. This makes it an ideal solution for busy weeknights when time is of the essence. Forget long stovetop cooking or waiting for a pan to heat up; the air fryer delivers speed and efficiency.
  • High-Quality Lean Protein: Chicken is widely recognized as a quintessential lean protein, frequently featured in nutrition and fitness meal plans. While it’s not the only path to a healthy diet, it’s an excellent and readily available option for supporting muscle growth, repair, and overall well-being.
  • Low Calorie for Weight Management: Our recipe utilizes lean ground chicken, making it a superb choice if you have weight loss goals. Protein-dense lean chicken helps you feel fuller for longer, reducing the likelihood of overeating and supporting a calorie-controlled diet.
  • Dietary Inclusivity: Ground chicken naturally fits into a variety of popular dietary patterns. Whether you’re cutting carbs for diabetes management, following a ketogenic, Paleo, or gluten-free diet, ground chicken is a versatile ingredient that aligns with your nutritional needs without requiring special substitutions.
  • Perfect for Meal Prep: Cooked ground chicken freezes exceptionally well, making it a fantastic component for meal prepping. Prepare a larger batch at the start of the week, divide it into portions, and enjoy quick, healthy meals throughout your busy schedule. It reheats beautifully, retaining its flavor and texture.
  • Delicious and Adaptable: While plain ground chicken can be mild, its real strength lies in its ability to serve as a blank canvas for an explosion of flavors. It readily absorbs seasonings, herbs, and spices, allowing you to create an endless variety of delicious dishes. From spicy to savory, the possibilities are truly limitless, making every meal an exciting culinary adventure.
  • Reduced Mess and Cleanup: Compared to pan-frying, air frying ground chicken significantly minimizes splatter and grease, leading to a cleaner kitchen. The enclosed environment of the air fryer keeps cooking contained, making cleanup a breeze.
  • Even Cooking and Texture: The circulating hot air in an air fryer ensures that ground chicken cooks evenly on all sides, resulting in perfectly browned crumbles with a pleasant texture. No more unevenly cooked spots, just consistently delicious results.

🥘 Air Fryer Ground Chicken Ingredients

Preparing this quick and easy recipe requires just a few basic ingredients:

  • 8 ounces ground chicken (approximately 227 grams)
  • ¼ tablespoon olive oil
  • Salt and pepper (adjust to your taste; for a spicy kick, consider adding red pepper flakes!)
raw ground chicken

For the best results, I recommend using 92% lean ground chicken for this recipe. While 99% fat-free ground chicken is available, the slightly higher fat content in 92% lean helps to prevent the chicken from drying out during the air frying process, which uses dry heat. The small amount of added olive oil also contributes to maintaining moisture and flavor, ensuring a juicy outcome.

You’ll also need a reliable air fryer and a spatula for stirring. My personal tests for this recipe were conducted using a 10-Quart Kalorik Digital Air Fryer Oven. However, this recipe is compatible with a wide range of air fryer brands, including popular models like the Ninja Foodi, Philips, Nuwave, Pampered Chef, Actifry, Instant Pot Vortex, Cosori, and Breville. Please remember that cooking times can vary between different air fryer models due to differences in wattage and design. It’s always a good practice to monitor your food closely the first time you try a new air fryer recipe to ensure perfect results tailored to your specific appliance.

🔪 How to Make Air Fryer Ground Chicken

Follow these simple steps for perfectly cooked ground chicken:

  1. Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for 5 minutes. This ensures the air fryer is at the optimal temperature for cooking.
  2. Carefully crumble the raw ground chicken directly into your hot air fryer basket or onto an air fryer tray. Ensure the chicken is spread out as much as possible for even cooking.
  3. Drizzle the crumbled chicken with olive oil and season generously with salt and pepper.
  4. If you are using an air fryer oven, place the tray in the top rack position for optimal air circulation and browning.

⏲️ Cooking Time and Temperature for Air Fryer Ground Chicken

Wondering how long to cook ground chicken in the air fryer and at what temperature? It’s quicker than you think!

Air fry ground chicken for a total of 5 minutes in an air fryer preheated to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190°C).

Here’s the breakdown for perfect results:

  1. Begin by air frying the ground chicken for 4 minutes.
  2. After 4 minutes, open the air fryer, and using a spatula, flip and stir the chicken. Break up any larger clumps to ensure even browning and cooking.
  3. Return the chicken to the air fryer and continue to air fry for 1 additional minute.

While you might want to check the internal temperature of the chicken mince to ensure it reaches a minimum safe temperature of 165°F (74°C), the chicken bits are typically too small to be accurately checked with a standard meat thermometer. Instead, rely on visual cues: the chicken should be opaque throughout and nicely browned.

Hot tip! The cooking time will be impacted by the quantity of chicken you use. If you’re cooking a larger batch, you may need to increase the cooking time by a few minutes or cook in smaller batches to avoid overcrowding the air fryer, which can lead to steaming instead of crisping.

🌡️ Leftover Ground Chicken: Storage & Reheating

Properly storing and reheating your cooked ground chicken ensures its safety and deliciousness for future meals.

You can store leftover air-fried ground chicken in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. This makes it an excellent option for quick meal prep throughout the week.

Cooked ground chicken also freezes exceptionally well. Allow the chicken to cool completely, then transfer it to a freezer-safe bag or container. It can be stored in the freezer for up to 3 months. Thaw frozen ground chicken in the refrigerator overnight before reheating.

To reheat, you can use the microwave for a quick warm-up, pan-fry it on the stovetop to regain some crispiness, or even return it to the air fryer for a few minutes at a slightly lower temperature (e.g., 350°F / 175°C) until thoroughly heated through.

FAQs about Air Fryer Ground Chicken

Is ground chicken healthy?

Absolutely! I consider ground chicken to be a healthy, nutrient-dense, and minimally processed food. It serves as an excellent source of lean protein, essential for muscle maintenance, satiety, and overall body function. If you’re seeking a lower-fat alternative to red meat or a budget-friendly protein, chicken is an outstanding choice that fits well into a balanced diet.

What type of meat is ground chicken?

Ground chicken can be made from various parts of the chicken. It can consist solely of chicken breasts, only chicken thighs, or a combination of both. Some packaging will specify which parts were used, which can influence the fat content and flavor profile (thigh meat tends to be richer and more moist). However, often the information is not provided, and it’s simply labeled “ground chicken.”

Is ground chicken slimy?

No, fresh ground chicken should never be slimy. Fresh ground chicken should have a pinkish color and a mild, neutral odor. If your ground chicken appears slimy, has a grayish or greenish tint, or has developed an off-putting odor, it has likely spoiled. For food safety reasons, it is crucial to discard any ground chicken you suspect may have gone bad to prevent foodborne illness.

How long is ground chicken good in the fridge?

According to the USDA, uncooked ground chicken should be stored in the refrigerator for no more than 1-2 days. Once cooked, ground poultry can be safely kept in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Always ensure it’s stored in an airtight container to maintain freshness and prevent contamination.

Can I cook ground chicken from frozen in the air fryer?

While it’s generally best to thaw ground chicken before cooking for even results, you can technically cook it from frozen in an air fryer. However, it will take significantly longer, and you’ll need to break it up frequently to ensure it cooks through. Expect to at least double the cooking time and make sure to stir and crumble it every few minutes to avoid raw spots. Always verify it reaches 165°F (74°C) using a meat thermometer if possible, or ensure it’s completely opaque throughout.

How can I season ground chicken for the air fryer?

Beyond simple salt and pepper, ground chicken is a flavor chameleon! For a Mexican flair, use taco seasoning, cumin, chili powder, and oregano. For an Italian touch, try garlic powder, onion powder, dried basil, and parsley. Asian-inspired dishes benefit from ginger, garlic, soy sauce (or tamari), and a touch of sesame oil. Don’t be afraid to experiment with your favorite spice blends!

💭 Expert Tips from Dietitian Summer Yule

This is a level 1 recipe (may help support fat loss). Chicken (particularly skinless chicken) counts as a lean protein, meaning it’s a relatively low-fat protein source. You get a lot of protein per calorie with chicken, more than a lot of other sources (such as many beans).

So why is protein from chicken (and other sources) important for weight loss? Protein is (in general) considered the most filling macronutrient. Aside from its role in preserving lean muscle mass, protein can help our meals to feel more satisfying.

To create a meal with ground chicken for weight loss, I would add a lot of non-starchy vegetables. The veggies will add filling fiber and fluid volume that is lacking in the chicken. An example of what this could look like is a broth-based chicken and veggie soup.

Ground chicken isn’t just for losing weight, however. You can make moderate or high calorie meals with ground chicken depending on what other ingredients you add. For example, you could make a high calorie meal easily by using your chicken in a creamy pasta dish.

Below, I have one of my favorite recipes using ground chicken. I know you’re going to love it!

Recipe Using Ground Chicken (Buffalo Chicken Stuffed Spaghetti Squash)

Serves: 2

  • 2 batches air fryer ground chicken (1 lb. or 454 grams)
  • 1 air fryer spaghetti squash (2 squash halves weighing a total of 2 lb. 4.5 oz or 1035 grams)
  • ½ tablespoon olive oil
  • ½ shallot, chopped
  • ½ cup chopped carrots
  • 3 stalks celery, diced
  • 6 tablespoons Frank’s RedHot sauce
  • 1½ tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons ranch dressing with no added sugar
  • 1 ounce blue cheese, crumbled (28 grams)

how to use air fryer ground chicken

Chop the shallot into ½-inch dice (1.27 cm) and the carrots and celery into ¼-inch dice (0.6 cm). Mix with the olive oil.

Preheat the air fryer to 375F (190C) for 5 minutes. Put the prepared veggies on a hot air fryer tray and air fry for 8-10 minutes. Use the top rack position if you have an air fryer oven.

While the veggies cook, melt the butter together with the Frank’s RedHot in a small saucepan on the stovetop to make the Buffalo sauce. Stir the sauce into the cooked ground chicken. Add the cooked veggies.

Fluff the squash strands in your cooked spaghetti squash halves. Fill each spaghetti squash boat with half the Buffalo chicken mixture. Drizzle with ranch dressing and sprinkle with blue cheese. Enjoy!
